Listen, I get it. Starting counseling can be overwhelming. So, to ease some of the stress, I've answered some of the most common questions that I get at the start of services. Of course, this list is not exhaustive. With that in mind, don't hesitate to write your questions down and ask during a free 15-minute consultation.
Do you take insurance? Will my insurance cover my sessions?
Yes, we are credentialed with the following insurance companies:
-Virginia Medicaid
-Sentara Health
-Anthem Healthkeepers/Anthem BCBS
-Tricare East
-United Healthcare/Optum/GEHA
-Cigna/Evernorth
Everyone's insurance is different. Because of this, we verify your eligibility and benefits before each session. We highly recommend contacting your insurance provider to determine your mental health coverage BEFORE the first appointment.
How much will the sessions cost?
If you are using your insurance, this depends on your benefits.
If you are not using insurance, the rates are listed below:
-Diagnostic Interview: $150
-60-minute individual sessions: $135
-45-minute individual sessions: $120
-30-minute individual sessions: $80
The first missed appointment is waived for all clients. However, after the first "freebie," a cancellation fee is applied to the credit card on file. For insurances where we cannot charge a cancellation fee, sessions are terminated when two sessions are missed within three months, or three sessions are missed within six months.
What do I need to know before my first session?
-Of course, you'll need to know the basics:
-Date and time of your appointment
-Office contact information (address and phone number to call if you get lost!)
-It's also highly encouraged that you check your insurance benefits BEFORE your appointment. Although we'll check eligibility and benefits before the appointment, it's your responsibility to be aware of any deductible, copay, or coinsurance.
-It's okay if you're not sure what to talk about. We can figure out your treatment goals within the first few sessions.
How often will I be seen?
This varies for everyone and will depend on several factors including, but not limited to, your presenting issues, diagnosis, symptoms severity, treatment plan, and insurance.
What does counseling with you look like?
The first session is what we call the diagnostic interview. During this session, we review the intake paperwork for the first 5-10 minutes. Then, we discuss your presenting concerns, explore your mental health history, medical history, family history, and conduct a mental status exam (MSE). The next 2-3 sessions will include administering self-report questionnaires to establish a baseline for your current level of functioning and help with treatment planning.
Our ultimate goal is to create a safe and comforting environment where you feel heard and understood. Essentially, your counselor functions as a container and a mirror. We hold space for you're physically, emotionally, and mentally experiencing in that moment. We also will reflect what needs to be processed and healed for your growth.
Counseling is more than "just talking." It's work. More specifically, it's an intensive, and sometimes exhausting, journey that requires commitment. Similar to a medical provider, your therapist develops a treatment plan that's specific to your presenting issues and diagnosis. Additionally, it's a relational process in which your therapist uses empirically validated interventions to re-wire your neural pathways leading to changed thought patterns, behaviors, and improved emotional functioning.
